Dinosaur birthday party ideas, and where to hold one

Planning a dinosaur birthday? Here's what actually works with a room full of four-to-ten-year-olds, from the trainers who've been to a lot of them.

Kids brush through the sand of a fossil dig box

Pick a theme

  • Dig site (sand table, brushes, "Caution: Paleontologists at work" sign)
  • Jungle expedition (safari hats, leaves, a research-camp corner)
  • Volcano party (red-and-orange table, a baking-soda volcano for the grand finale)

Games that work

  • Dino egg hunt (plastic eggs, small dinosaurs inside)
  • Dino stomp freeze dance
  • Fossil match (find the bone, name the dinosaur)
  • Pin the tail on the T. rex

Food ideas

  • Dino nuggets
  • "Fossil" fruit cups
  • Volcano cupcakes with orange frosting
  • A "swamp water" punch with gummy dinosaurs

Where to hold it

  • At home (a living room or backyard works; we need power)
  • A park pavilion (check that it has an outlet)
  • A community or clubhouse room
  • Your own venue: we come to you, so there's no venue fee from us.

How many guests?

Up to 20 kids: the Classic Dino Encounter. A bigger party, or the whole class plus siblings: the Jurassic Expedition, up to 200 guests.

A simple party timeline

  1. Arrivals and a craft (15 min)
  2. Dinosaur encounter and fossil dig (45 min)
  3. Cake and presents (20 min)
  4. Goodbyes with a trading card.
